They take place shortly after the first game and contain some connections to it. Of course, that was true of the original game gear titles. The only downside is there's no charming towns to walk around in. It's exceptionally well done, there's a ton of interesting content. Shining Force CD is a port of some game gear titles. This is a slam-dunk, no doubt "play this as soon as you can" if you liked the first one. It's a great game too, though the story and art-direction took a bit more of a kid-friendly approach. Shining Force 2 has a lot of quality-of-life improvements, better mechanics, and a far larger map which can be backtracked on and traveled at will, rather than the chapter setup of the first game. Not necessary to play, but it's not a bad idea.
